giving the green light to the Green Market (sorta)
Less than a week after local officials announced the return of a much sought after Green Market to Bay Ridge — an announcement heralded by residents and politicians as a welcomed response to local supermarket woes — the project already appears to be on borrowed time.
According to today’s Daily News, the Bay Ridge Green market – which will set up shop starting next week – only has a firm commitment from Walgreen’s corporate to use their parking lot through March.
City Green Market Director Michael Hurwitz told the Daily News he hopes the chain store could be persuaded to let the market stick around.
“My hope is that with enough community support, Walgreens realizes that this will be a … win-win for everyone.” Adding that the market in the parking lot could draw shoppers into the drugstore.
However, the prospect of Walgreen’s sacrificing its precious lot in a parking strapped Bay Ridge, once the pharmacy giant comes online in June, seems highly unlikely. Which is why local officials are already stressing the importance of momentum to determining the long-term success of a Green Market establishing permanent residency in Bay Ridge.
